Qualification and Therapeutic Approach

I am a chartered counselling psychologist fulfilling the professional training and CPD (continued professional development) requirements of the British Psychological Society (BPS). 'Chartered psychologist' is a protected title and guarantees a high level of expertise. I am also registered as a psychotherapist with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and I hold the European Certificate for Psychotherapy (ECP) issued by the European Association for Psychotherapy.

I am currently employed as a Professional Tutor on the Practitioner Doctorate in Psychotherapeutic and Counselling Psychology (PsychD) at the University of Surrey in Guildford. I also work as a freelance clinician with a private psychiatric and psychological service in central London.

My training has included:

  • Masters in Counselling Psychology
  • Bachelor in Psychology Honours
  • Diploma in Gestalt Psychotherapy
  • Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced Courses in Family Therapy (equivalent to post-graduate diploma level)
  • Diploma in Psychotherapy Supervision
  • Various courses in CBT and couple psychotherapy.

I am currently undertaking further studies leading to a doctoral qualification at the Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationships (TCCR) in London which is a world renowned centre of excellence.

My work is influenced by:

  • Humanistic psychotherapy with its emphasis on the innate potential for recovery and growth in every individual;
  • Systemic theory with a complimentary emphasis on how the environment (human relationships, dominant cultural beliefs etc) influences mental health and happiness;
  • Psychoanalytic theory with its enlightening insights into how early experiences influence our development and thus the manner in which we function;
  • Cognitive behavioural techniques which allow effective unlearning and management of specific difficulties.

In my work I maintain a distinct relational focus as we are all keenly aware that human experience never occurs in a vacuum. Mental health professionals sometimes seem to forget this! Our problems are often influenced by the quality of our relationship to ourselves, people around us and the environment. Modifying these often solves or reduces the distress (or the symptoms) we experience – even though biological determinants may be at play. Additionally, I hope to offer you a professional relationship where you feel understood and respected. Therapy is a collaborative relationship in which we will all use our different resources to find a way towards a better quality of life.
